Red 5 Comics Finds ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction

With the financial, human and political costs of combat in the Middle East growing, the United States military has adopted an unusual, but highly effective, new weapon... zombies.

That's the premise for "ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction," a new action-horror comic series coming this summer from Red 5 Comics and acclaimed creator, Kevin Grevioux. A prolific comic writer, Grevioux is perhaps best known as the creator of the "Underworld" movie franchise, and recently wrapped production in New Zealand on the third installment -- Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.

"'ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction' is a bit of a return to my horror roots," said Grevioux. "Prior to creating this series, I was never really a big fan of zombies. But I came up with what I felt was an interesting twist on the genre and I'm thankful that Paul Ens and Scott Chitwood were open to the idea."

Air-dropped into the deadliest hot zones, the walking dead of "ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction" indiscriminately infect every last warring insurgent -- on either side of the conflict. Specifically engineered to be photosensitive, once enemy infection becomes complete by dawn, both the originals and newly created zombies dissolve as a means to control widespread and accidental zombification. This allows live soldiers to enter and safely occupy the now-combatant-free territory. However, this plan takes a deadly turn when one of the U.S. zombies, dubbed -- Zombie Zero -- fails to dissolve at the expected time, and begins to wreak havoc in the Middle East by creating others like him. This leads the U.S. military brass to send in a special operative to quietly take out Zombie Zero and his minions before their existence becomes known to the rest of the world.

In just its seventh month of publishing, Red 5 Comics has already received critical and popular attention for such series as "Neozoic," "Abyss" and "Afterburn." The company was recently honored with Diamond Comics' GEM Award as "Best New Publisher," and is up for numerous industry awards including two coveted Eisner Award nominations for "Atomic Robo" with the prestigious "Best Limited Series" honor.

"From the beginning, we wanted Red 5 Comics to deliver a wide variety of theatrical-scale and cinematic-style entertainment in the comic medium that we love," said Red 5 Comics co-founder, Paul Ens. "We'd been looking for a horror / thriller title to add to our lineup, but nothing was standing out. When Kevin approached us about 'ZMD,' we knew immediately he had a unique and exciting take on a genre that isn't always known for fresh ideas."

"ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction #1," the first of six bi-monthly issues, will be on shelves this July. To ensure you don't miss out, contact your local comic shop by May 15 and ask them to pre-order your copy today using Diamond order code MAY084097.

Red 5 Comics creates and produces cinematic-style comic book entertainment, debuting its first titles in October 2007. It was founded by Paul Ens, former Director of Lucasfilm's Lucas Online, and Scott Chitwood, co-founder of TheForce.net. Red 5 is presented by ComingSoon.net and SuperheroHype.com.
